![]() Nevertheless, I still aspire to a dually and a hardside. We've had a lot of enjoyable miles and fun times with our rig. With a hardside and dually gasser, I figure we'd get maybe half that. With our rig we can generally figure on 18 to 19 mpg. One other cost consideration is fuel economy. Because we do most of our traveling in warm weather and like to have our bedroom cool, we want 120 volts for our AC. And it is less than satisfactory for other than liquid waste.Īnother consideration is electrical hookups. Some have asked, "Why don't you get a Porti Potti?" But we have one. Mainly for cost reasons, we went with Option 2: Our rig is not self-contained. Moreover, because I am sensitive to smoke, we prefer to avoid campfires. Plus a 2-door, refrigerator-freezer would provide more menu flexibility. And we'd like a camper that doesn't require popping the top. Ideally, we'd go anywhere and everywhere and stop for the night without looking for a campground or RV park. If cost were not a consideration, we'd have chosen Option 1. A bonus: our outfit fits in a std garage. And we added a new Phoenix popup in 2004 for $9k (don't try to buy one for that today). We bought a 6-cyl, manual Tundra std cab longbed new in 2003 for $19k. (I would want a dually for the stability if not for the payload.)įor Option 2, I can quote pretty specific prices because that is the option we chose. ![]() But a possibility might be $15k for a used hardside camper and $20k for a used dually truck. The cost for Option 1 could vary widely depending on the make, model, and age of the camper and truck. ![]() And pay to park near a restroom most nights. Or (Option 2) a much less costly but not-self-contained camper and a suitable truck to carry it. What's better? Paying for a campsite? Or finding a place to stay for free?įortunately or unfortunately, there's no one simple answer.įor us, the answer was dollars and cents: Option 1 – a truck and self-contained camper that we could park anywhere, ideally at no overnight cost.
